Lou, who is on our programme for young people, wrote a great piece on his blog about his volunteer experience. He shared it with us for #iWill Week, a week of celebrating and empowering young people to tell stories of youth social action.

I am going to blog about my experience volunteering at Saz Media and how I fully recommend any young person to volunteer at a local charity.

Initially, I was very doubtful about going into a place like this and working with young people, but then I ignored my gut and went inside; I quickly got on with everyone there and I felt very welcome. At first, I was very nervous about working with young people, but since they were all aged 12-17, I could relate to their issues better and I felt like I could help them out easier.

I also thought, how would I use the skills I gain from this, into my media career

On the first day, we learned about how to create light painting shots from the tutor, Tolu, who taught everyone what they needed to know, and which camera settings to use. I took my own personal photos, as well as contributed to Sara's website by taking photos of the group for her

The next day, we went on a group activity where we went out on a trip to Staircase House and the Air Raid Shelters in Stockport town centre, taking all kinds of photos and us as volunteers also had to make sure everyone is together and safe when we're moving around. Because we were outside the place, we all had to wear high-vis jackets so we would know where everyone was, and we would make sure everyone is together.

Finally, the group did a portrait session with a school teacher called James. We spent most of the day inside but we walked around Underbank before we ended the day handing out certificates to everyone.

On a whole, I fully enjoyed myself there! I got on well with everyone; giving advice and teaching young people what I know and love was my favourite part about volunteering for this workshop

I felt my volunteering had paid off when everyone just got on with it on Thursday, so we hardly got asked for help...is that a good thing? I think so! >.<

I would love to attend the December workshop and help out even more for this group, and hopefully get to meet more people.
