It has been one year since we launched our programme supporting young people with multiple complex needs in Bristol.

In partnership with many charities across the city, our programme will continue to provide one-to-one support to young people aged 16-25, motivating and enabling them to participate in community volunteering to build a more positive future.

Over this past year, we have worked with some of the hardest-to-reach young people in Bristol, including those who are carers for their parents or another family member, have an unsupported home-life, are living with domestic abuse, are asylum seekers or refugees or are young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

"I feel a lot happier having volunteered. I feel like I've finally done something. I need to be able to do stuff on my own, so I just had to do it.”

Find out how you can get involved

Over the last 12 months:

  • 34 young people have received intensive one-to-one support
  • 19 young people have gone on to volunteer at one or more organisation
  • 100% of clients receiving support have seen an improvement in their confidence, motivation and self-esteem
  • 100% of clients also said that they now feel better connected to their community and more positive about their future.
“It couldn't be better. I wouldn't have been able to do it on my own. They have put me on their training scheme to become a paid youth worker there too.”

Community volunteering has a positive impact on personal development, including increased confidence, improved social skills and better communication skills. These skills improve a young person’s chance of finding and maintaining employment and participating fully in their communities.

"I am so happy with this. It's so creative and diverse, you can see that anything goes. I had no idea that so much went on here. Honestly I'm made up.”

We chatted with Lucinda, who manages the programme in Bristol, about her proudest and most memorable moments from the past year. She said, “Step Together is becoming better known in the city now and it’s a great feeling when I introduce myself and they already know who we are and what we do. I’m proud of all my clients, for lots of different reasons. What looks like something quite insignificant to some people can be a huge leap forward for one of my young people.”

"The service we have received from the first point of contact with Lucinda at Step Together has been fantastic. Their response time was superb and the flexibility in the service relating to clients was exceptional. Since my referral has been processed, the Young Person has already found a voluntary placement in a field that interests him and is now more confident to continue with college and eventually complete a University Degree.”
