Coming to terms with an impending medical discharge from the military, can be a demoralising and daunting time for service personnel. With his confidence rapidly decreasing, Scott found himself facing this difficult challenge, uncertain of how to move forward. With Step Together’s support, volunteering has been the turning point Scott was looking for and he is now well on his way to building a more positive future.

Due to ongoing mental and physical health issues, Scott is being medically discharged after a long and successful military career. Struggling to cope and feeling a sense of purposeless; Scott had found that his young daughter’s nursery school run was quickly becoming the only structure in his day. Unsure of what to do next, Scott knew he needed more but didn’t feel ready to even consider employment at this stage.

Scott was introduced to Lorna from Step Together at Tedworth House, a military recovery centre in Wiltshire. At a 1:1 meeting, Lorna explained how volunteering could bring back some structure to his day, as well as help him find his confidence again and develop new skills and experience. Listening to Scott’s interests, it became clear he had a passion for sailing and also liked the idea of mentoring. Following this, Lorna suggested volunteering on a week-long sailing expedition with The Princes Trust and Turn to Starboard. This opportunity would enable Scott to combine his passion for sailing and be assigned a role as a mentor for young people joining the expedition.  With Lorna’s support, Scott was successful at interview and offered a position. Despite some initial apprehension, Scott was keen to be out on the sea again.

For Scott, the expedition was instrumental in building his confidence and motivation. It has inspired Scott to gain further qualifications in sailing and he has now volunteered to support future sailing courses.  Feeling encouraged, Scott has also approached a local programme for young people about pursuing further volunteering opportunities.

With his medical discharge date fast-approaching, Scott now felt ready and made the decision to start applying for jobs. Successful interviews followed and after discussing with his family, Scott accepted a position with a logistics company and was relieved to find himself in full-time employment well before his discharge date. Scott has since moved on and will soon be starting a new driving job with a logistics firm.
