"Volunteering has given me confidence" - Nadine's Story

27 February 2017

Nadine has spent the majority of her childhood living with her foster carer in Manchester. She has learning difficulties and was very shy and quiet when she was first introduced to Step Together.

Nadine was excited by the prospect of volunteering, so Jill from Step Together began researching opportunities and helped her apply for a role at a local food bank. The interview process felt scary and intimidating for Nadine, but Jill was there to accompany her and provide support.

Nadine started her placement working ‘behind the scenes’ sorting the food parcels, as she didn’t feel comfortable talking to customers. As the weeks went by, she started to grow in confidence and interact with the other volunteers. Now, a year later, Nadine has volunteered over 100 hours, receiving her bronze, silver and gold certificates from Step Together, and is a highly valued member of the team. Sheri, who now supports Nadine in her placement, has noticed a real positive change in Nadine. She happily chats to customers and is much more confident in her role.

Dan who manages the Food Bank project said: “We have definitely seen a big improvement in Nadine’s confidence.  Food Bank can be quite daunting but Nadine handles it really well and is one of our most reliable and valued volunteers”.

Nadine said: “I would definitely recommend volunteering…it’s made me more confident”.  Nadine is now aiming towards her platinum certificate for 250 hours of volunteering.
