Launch of our new Bristol project

15 March 2017

This week we are launching our new project helping highly disadvantaged young people in Bristol to take positive action to change their lives through volunteering in their community.

We are delighted to welcome a new member to the Step Together team, Lucinda Thelwell, who will be running this project. Lucinda will be providing 1:1 support to 60-80 disadvantaged young people, aged 16-25, to engage with volunteering during the next year.

The Bristol project will support young people who suffer from a variety of complex needs, which may include lack of positive parenting, drug and alcohol misuse, neglect, poverty of opportunity, low expectations, depression and other mental health issues or disabilities. Many of these young people are at risk of homelessness or offending.

Mike Silvey, Step Together’s Director, said “Having moved our office to Bristol 18 months ago, it feels right that we should be investing in young people here and helping to address the many barriers to employment they face.  Working in partnership with many charities across Bristol, the new project will build on young people's strengths and focus on building ambitions, using volunteering as a stepping stone.”

“When a young person is ready to ‘move on’ from our service this does not mean that they are ‘work ready’ and we recognise a gap in a young person’s pathway to independence that our service cannot fill.  Step Together’s 1:1 volunteer service will fill this gap and ensure a structured and supported transition for our clients in taking the next step towards independence and work readiness.  It will provide the continued support necessary during this transition to independence to prevent relapse and isolation."
